Training and Development

SWAN Fostering believes in the benefit of investing in the training and development of our staff, managers and foster carers. Because of our pro-active and encouraging approach to training, our foster carers can fully apply themselves to achieving the best possible outcomes for the children and young people in their care.

At SWAN Fostering, we regard training as a crucial element to providing high quality placements.

Fostering is a demanding and complex task, and SWAN Fostering is committed to providing good quality training, which is accessible and relevant to all our foster carers.

SWAN Fostering offers core training which is mandatory for all approved foster carers and includes:

  • CWDC workshops and standards workbooks
  • Introduction to Fostering
  • Safeguarding and Safer Caring - Sessions 1 & 2
  • Recording Skills
  • Life Work with Children
  • Equality and Diversity
  • First Aid
  • Health of children in care
  • Education of children in care
  • Managing Challenging Behavior - all age groups
  • Attachment - sessions 1 & 2
In addition to the core training and e-learning opportunities, foster carers' individual training needs will be identified during regular supervision sessions with Supervising Social Workers. At SWAN Fostering, we utilise the Training Programme by the Fostering Network; hold monthly support groups and workshops; and offer access to Research Counts conferences.

90% of our foster carers have achieved an NVQ qualification through SWAN Fostering funded professional training. We will provide one foster carer within each household with professional training in an NVQ or similar qualification.

SWAN Fostering is proud to announce they are winners in the category of Training and Development, in the Federation of Small Businesses Hertfordshire Small Business Awards 2010.
