Allowances for Foster Carers

At SWAN Fostering, we recognise the vital and sometimes challenging role our foster carers have in providing outstanding care for children and young people.

We understand that Becoming a Foster Carer is a life-changing event, that should be appreciated and rewarded.

SWAN Fostering believes that allowances paid to foster carers should reflect the hard work they and their families put in. At the same time, the cost of placements should also be realistic for Local Authorities to meet, and for us to provide carers with the level of support they need.

Weekly Allowances

On average, SWAN Fostering's foster carers will receive £400.00 for each child placed with them. This will vary depending on age and the needs of the child.

For example, for children under 12 years and over 5 years, carers will receive £335.00 per week. For older children with complex needs, the allowance will be higher than £400.00 per week.

The allowance is to cover all the costs for the child as well as provide a generous reward for the foster carer.

Useful Information

Foster Carers are classed as “self-employed” with HMRC and as such, each fostering household will be required to advise HMRC.

The foster placement allowances are not generally taxable although there may be some exceptions, for example the number of children you have in placement.  .
SWAN Fostering does not deduct the tax at source and foster carers should make their own arrangements and seek advice from an independent accountant and Inland Revenue.
